Bellingham International Airport has been awarded $2 million for the first phase of a planned runway reconstruction project.

Funding for the project was announced last week as part of nearly $67 million in Airport Infrastructure Grants from the Federal Aviation Administration, U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., said in a statement.

The grants are part of former President Biden’s 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Cantwell said.

At Bellingham International Airport, the grant will fund the design phase of a project to “rehabilitate 6,700 feet of existing paved Runway 16/34 to maintain its structural integrity and minimize foreign object debris to extend its useful life,” Cantwell said.

Runway 16/34 is 6,700 feet long and 150 feet wide with high-intensity runway edge lighting, according to AirNav.com. It’s grooved asphalt surface is in good condition, AirNAv said.
