Whatcom undersheriff reinstated after two-month investigation into undisclosed allegations
Whatcom County Undersheriff Steve Harris is returning to full duty Friday after a two-month investigation of undisclosed allegations that were made against him in late August, Sheriff Donnell Tanksley said in a statement.
Tanksley did not detail the allegations against Harris or mention any discipline.
“While I cannot disclose the specific results of the investigation to protect the privacy of the individuals involved, I am taking measures to address the concerns expressed. The process furthers our unwavering commitment to ensure compliance with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office policies and build a team that fosters respect and open communication,” Tanksley said.
Harris, who has nearly three decades of service with the Sheriff’s Office, was on paid administrative leave as the Seattle law firm of Williams, Kastner & Gibbs conducted an independent investigation.
Final cost of the probe was not included in a letter describing the terms of the contract that The Bellingham Herald obtained in a public records request.
Harris was promoted to second-in-command in December, following Tanksley’s election as sheriff in November 2023. He had previously served as a deputy and detective.
“It is a common practice for law enforcement agencies to place employees on administrative leave while an investigation into allegations of potential misconduct are being completed. Paid administrative leave is non-disciplinary, and does not mean that the agency is acknowledging that the allegations against the employee are true,” Tanksley said in September, when the investigation was announced.
