Locals to join virtual candlelight vigil marking Capitol insurrection
Members of the League of Women Voters are joining with others around the state and nation to observe the first anniversary of the Capitol insurrection when rioters loyal to ex-President Trump tried to stop the election certification of Joe Biden as U.S. president.
The online Virtual Candlelight Vigil is scheduled for 6-7 p.m. (Pacific) Thursday, Jan. 6.
Among the participants will be members of the League of Women Voters of Bellingham-Whatcom County and the League of Women Voters of Thurston County, according to an emailed statement.
“This event will give Washingtonians an opportunity to reflect on the terrible events of January 6, 2021 — including the lives lost during the attack on the Capitol,” said Lunell Haught, president of the League of Women Voters of Washington.
“We must come together to pass critical federal voting rights legislation that will enable us to realize the promise of democracy for all. No matter our color, zip code, or income, we must all be able to participate in the decisions that shape our daily lives and futures.”
Guests will include Charles Douglas III, executive director of pro-democracy group Common Power, Broadway star Brittain Ashford, U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Seattle, and other Washington state politicians, the statement said
