The eldest son of Rob and Michele Reiner is recalling the horrific moment he learned his parents died, saying he was “robbed of so many things” on that fateful December day.

Jake Reiner, 34, posted a lengthy Substack essay Friday as he approaches his first birthday without his parents. He had been at a celebration of life for a friend who died in October when his sister Romy called.

“Minutes later, she called back telling me our mother was also dead,” Jake Reiner recalled. “The 45-minute Lyft ride from downtown to the west side was unendurable. My world, as I knew it, had collapsed. I was in a trance. The only thing I could focus on was that I needed to get to my childhood home. I needed to get to my sister. I needed to figure out what the hell just happened.”

The Context

Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were found fatally stabbed on December 14 in the master bedroom of their 10,000-square-foot estate in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles. The couple’s son, Nick, 32, was later arrested and remains in custody after pleading not guilty in February to their murders.

Nick, one of Rob’s four children, faces death or life in prison without possibility of parole if convicted. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman has said prosecutors have yet to decide whether to seek the death penalty in the shocking slayings of the beloved Hollywood actor-director and his wife, who worked as a photographer and producer.

The couple died from “multiple sharp force injuries,” according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. Prosecutors have yet to publicly announce an alleged motive in the slayings, but police had responded to the couple’s home seven times between August 2013 through December 2025, including twice on the day they were found dead, CBS News reported.

Sources previously told the Los Angeles Times that Rob and Nick Reiner argued the night before the slayings at a holiday party hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien, where guests said Nick behaved erratically.

What To Know

In his Substack post on Friday, Reiner wrote he felt compelled to share “his story,” while insisting Romy would do the same on her own timetable.

“I was robbed of so many things that day,” he wrote. “My parents won't be at my wedding, they won't get to hold their future grandchild, and they won't get to see me have the successful career I'm still seeking. It simultaneously breaks my heart and enrages me.”

“Nothing can prepare you for what it feels like to lose both parents instantly at the same time,” Jake Reiner’s essay continued. “It’s too devastating to comprehend. I still wake up every morning having to convince myself that, no, it's not a dream. This truly is my living nightmare.”

Reiner said he realizes “how frightened” his parents must have been during the attack.

“They were the last people in the world to deserve what happened to them,” he wrote. “They deserved to be loved, they deserved to be respected, and above all they deserved to be appreciated for how much they gave to all three of us and to the world.”

Jake Reiner, meanwhile, said his late parents had been the “center” of his life.

“They are my guiding lights, the foundation of who I am as a human being, and the most giving people I have ever known,” he added. “A lot of people don't have the luxury of having the best parents, the best mom, or the best dad, but I did. The love they have for me, my brother, and my sister is truly unconditional. And the love they have for each other in their marriage is something I always looked up to as the standard of what a successful relationship looks like.”
