An Indiana man went to check on his mother’s home in the wake of a winter storm, then discovered a suspicious pair stuck in the snow outside her residence, police told news outlets.

At about 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6, the Evansville Police Department received a 911 call from the man saying the property had been burglarized, WEVV reported.

The man told police the power had gone out at the home so he drove over to see what state it was in, WEHT reported. As he arrived he saw two SUVs stuck in the snow — one in the driveway and a Jeep in the backyard — and a red pickup truck trying to pull them free, police told the station.

There was a man and woman he didn’t know outside the home and when he asked them what they were doing there, they weren’t able to give him an answer, police told WFIE. Then he noticed the garage was open, the back door had been forced open and his mother’s home was robbed, police told the outlet. Some of her belongings had been loaded into the Jeep trapped in the backyard.

The snow foiled their getaway, but one of the accused burglars, a 32-year-old man, ran from the scene, WFIE reported. However, the snow caused him problems a second time, as police followed his footprints to a hotel where he had a trash bag filled with the victim’s belongings.

The man’s accomplice, a 24-year-old woman, was also taken into custody, police told WEVV. During an interview, police say she told investigators she saw him breaking a window to get into the home, then taking items from inside.

The man was booked Jan. 6 on a charge of burglary, as well as several drug charges, Vanderburgh County jail records show. The woman is charged with one count of burglary.
