A senior cat is in need of stability and a kind heart after her owner of over a decade died in Indiana.

Bentley, a captivating Calico cat, was thrust into an unknown world after losing the only person she really loved. She then had to be surrendered to the Humane Society for Hamilton County in Fishers.

“Bentley’s world turned upside down when she lost her person—the only companion she had known in her 12.5 years,” the shelter said in a Facebook post on Dec. 12. “Surrendered to HSHC in January 2024, she was terrified and confused. But with love, patience, and care from her foster family, Bentley is starting to trust again and show her sweet, loyal nature.”

According to a comment left by Kelsey Canary, Bentley was her mother’s longtime cat, who was like her little shadow.

“She would ask about Bentley constantly in her final days. Surrendering her was the hardest thing our family has had to do as she was so attached to our Mom,” Canary said.

“My sister and I both have other pets so we were wrecked when we couldn’t keep Bentley but I am crying sad but also happy tears to see she is being taken care of so well and I hope she finds another happy loving home to spend the rest of her days in.”

The shelter says that Bentley’s “ideal home” would include:

  • Adults only

  • A quiet atmosphere

  • A stable routine

  • An owner with patience

  • No other pets

Bentley has only been used to a single person her entire life, so naturally she was horrified when coming to the shelter, her pet profile said.

“It took me eight weeks before I would approach my foster parents without hissing, growling, or nipping,” the profile says. “Remember, I only knew one human being! Life had turned upside down for me. After eight months of patient, loving care, I will accept pets from my foster parents on my terms. I sometimes even lie next to them on their bed.”

Fishers is about a 20-mile drive northeast from Indianapolis.
