Poacher shoots bull moose and leaves entire carcass to waste, Idaho officials say
A poacher shot a bull moose and left the entire animal to waste, including its antlers, Idaho wildlife officials said.
The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking the public’s help to identify the suspected poacher, who the department believes shot the moose with a rifle on or around Nov. 29, officials said in a Dec. 16 news release.
It was reported along Zaza Road in the Craig Mountain Wildlife Management Area near Lewiston — in a unit where moose tags are not issued — Dec. 1, officials said.
“Unfortunately, none of the meat was able to be salvaged and the entire animal was wasted,” officials said.
Photos show the moose carcass lying on its side in snow with antlers still attached to its head.
Moose are considered a trophy species in Idaho, meaning no one can harvest more than one antlered and one antleress moose in the state during their lifetime, officials said. There are exceptions for Super Hunt tag winners and leftover tag holders.
Moose tags are not issued for the Craig Mountain area within unit 11, officials said.
Officers are looking for more information to help solve the case. Anyone with information can report it to the Idaho Citizens Against Poaching Hotline at 1-800-632-5999 or directly to conservation officer John McLain at 208-827-1488. Callers can stay anonymous and may be eligible for a reward, officials said.
Lewiston is about a 270-mile drive north from Boise.
