Lost mushroom hunter spends 2 nights in cold forest — then Oregon rescuers hear voice
A lost mushroom hunter spent two nights in a cold, thick forest until Oregon rescuers heard her voice, deputies said.
The 65-year-old woman was reported missing at about 6:30 p.m. Dec. 6 in an area south of Shore Acres State Park, the Coos County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.
She had gotten separated from her group and was believed to be behind “locked private timber property gates,” near the state park, deputies said.
The U.S. Coast Guard responded with a helicopter to search for her, but rescuers said they couldn’t find her.
Efforts to find her were called off in the early morning of Dec. 7 due to weather and safety, deputies said.
Search teams continued to look for her later that morning with police dogs and more help from the Coast Guard, but rescue teams paused at night until the next day.
At about 12:30 p.m. Dec. 8, searchers on foot made voice contact with the missing woman, deputies said.
Then two rescuers moved through “dense dark brush” to find her, deputies said.
A warming fire was lit for the woman, then she was airlifted from the area and taken to a medical facility, deputies said.
“Plan for the trip you are going on and be mindful of the terrain and weather conditions. Dress for the weather, stick to your plan and always insure someone knows your plan,” deputies said in the post.
Shore Acres State Park is near the coastline in southern Oregon.
