Sweet dog making miraculous recovery after being shot in the head, shelter says
An animal shelter in Philadelphia is reaching out to the public for help tracking down who shot a dog “at close range.”
Maverick, a black terrier mix, was rushed into an animal hospital Nov. 20 by someone, and veterinarians confirmed a wound on his head was a gunshot, the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said in a news release.
Luckily, the dog survived.
“At this time, the PSPCA’s Law Enforcement team is asking for the public’s help in learning more about how the dog ended up in this condition, and who may be responsible. Due to the size of the wound, and the damage left behind, it is suspected to have been done at close range,” Pennsylvania SPCA said in the release.
The shelter’s Animal Law Enforcement team has taken over the investigation.
“This act of cruelty is especially heartless,” Julie Klim, CEO of the Pennsylvania SPCA, said in the release. “It seems clear from Maverick’s injuries that the responsible party intended to kill this sweet dog. But, miraculously, Maverick survived. We at the Pennsylvania SPCA are going to do everything we can to not only find those responsible, but importantly, give Maverick the best life – where he will never again be subjected to such horrific cruelty.”
According to the release, the wound has left Maverick with a “head tilt, a delayed gait of his right hind end, and trauma to his left forebrain.”
He also has to have his left eye removed.
