Quadriplegic woman raped by home intruder in 2000, CA cops say. Now, man arrested
More than two decades after a quadriplegic woman was raped in her apartment, a man has been arrested and charged, California police say.
The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office charged Michael Lamonte Evans, 50, of Los Angeles, with forcible rape in relation to the 2000 sexual assault, the Concord Police Department said in a Nov. 27 Facebook post.
The woman was inside her Concord apartment Dec. 6, 2000, when someone broke inside and “ forcibly assaulted her,” police said.
“At the time, detectives collected DNA evidence from the scene, which was entered into a national DNA database,” according to police.
“Despite exhaustive efforts and follow-up on multiple leads, the case went cold,” police said.
Decades later, detectives finally got a DNA match to Evans, police said, adding that they obtained a warrant for his arrest.
“We are deeply saddened that the victim in this case passed away several years ago,” police said. “We extend our gratitude to her friends and family, whose support and assistance was extremely important in this investigation.”
Evans is in jail custody in Los Angeles County on unrelated charges and will be extradited to Contra Costa County to stand trial, police said.
Evans is being held on $1 million bail, according to police.
Concord is about a 30-mile drive northeast from San Francisco.
