A man was arrested after California police say he came out of surgery and confessed to killing his mother.

Officers arrived at a Vallejo home after getting a report about a stabbing the morning of Nov. 16, the Vallejo Police Department said in a Nov. 17 news release.

Medical personnel at the home told officers that a man and woman with stab wounds had been taken to a hospital, police said.

Both were taken to a hospital in critical condition, according to police.

Investigations showed the 63-year-old man stabbed his wife “at least once,” police said.

The man and his wife both underwent surgery and are expected to survive, police said.

After the man’s surgery, “he spontaneously confessed to killing his biological mother,” police said.

He said the killing happened before the stabbing incident, according to police.

Officers arrived at the home the man referenced and did a welfare check, police said.

Upon getting no answer at the home, officers forced their way inside and found the man’s mother dead, according to police. The woman’s identity will not be released until her family is notified.

The man was arrested on a murder and attempted murder charge, police said.

He will be booked into jail after he is cleared to leave the hospital, police said.

McClatchy News reached out to the Solano County District Attorney’s Office and is awaiting a response on formal charges.

Vallejo is about a 30-mile drive northeast from San Francisco.
