Fight between kids leads teen to shoot 14-year-old in the head, Michigan cops say
A fight started by a 6-year-old and an 8-year-old escalated when a teenager got involved and fired shots, striking a 14-year-old in the head, Michigan police said.
A 13-year-old boy stepped in to break up the two kids’ argument Nov. 7, Detroit Police Assistant Chief Charles Fitzgerald said during a news conference. The 8-year-old ran home and returned with a 14-year-old family member and his mother.
As the two teens started to argue, a 16-year-old came to the area followed by his mother, Fitzgerald said. The 16-year-old boy pulled out a gun and started to fire, police said.
His mother tried to stop him, but the teen shot the 14-year-old in the head and his own mother in the arm, according to Fitzgerald.
The 14-year-old is in “extremely critical” condition and needed surgery, police said. The suspected shooter’s mother is expected to recover, according to Fitzgerald.
The 16-year-old dropped the gun, fled the area and was caught by undercover officers, Fitzgerald said.
“The first thing he asked when they got him in the car was how’s his mom,” Fitzgerald said.
Another teen tried to pick up the weapon and discard it, police said. Fitzgerald said he was taken into custody and is expected to be released.
