Man fatally shoots wife while she’s making dinner in kitchen, Colorado officials say
A man is going to prison for the rest of his life after being convicted of fatally shooting his wife, Colorado officials said.
In September 2022, John Ramos called 911 and said he’d shot his wife in the chest and head in their Broomfield apartment, according to an Oct. 23 news release by the Adams and Broomfield District Attorney’s Office.
Ramos stated he was defending himself because his wife had “been abusive to him throughout the day,” officials said.
When officers arrived, Ramos was arrested, officials said.
Ramos shot his wife three times while she was making dinner in the kitchen, prosecutors said.
She was shot in the forehead and twice in the neck, officials said.
During an interview after his arrest, Ramos said his wife hadn’t threatened him with a knife like he’d initially told 911, officials said.
“This was a brutal killing,” District Attorney Brian Mason said in the release. “In the worst possible act of domestic violence, a husband fatally shot his wife in the kitchen while she was making dinner. It’s hard to fathom such a horrific act against a loved one. I’m thankful to my team, law enforcement, and the jury in this case for delivering a just verdict.”
After a four-day trial, Ramos was convicted of first-degree murder on Oct. 18, officials said.
Ramos, 30, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, prosecutors said.
Broomfield is about a 20-mile drive northwest of Denver.
