Pup was in agony as an infection ate through his jaw bone. Now, his world has changed
A dog who was living in excruciating pain is now on the mend and feeling much better at an Ohio shelter.
When Butterscotch, a sweet pup with soulful eyes, was rescued by the Jefferson County Humane Society’s Humane Operations Team, he was living in a “putrid environment” with another dog. Both were suffering from horrific conditions.
“Covered in excrement from head, to toe, to tail, they required medicated baths to soothe their skin from urine burns while we tried scrubbing, without causing pain,” the shelter in Wintersville said in an Oct. 22 Facebook post.
But that wasn’t the end of their conditions. Butterscotch was suffering from serious mouth pain.
“Butterscotch had such serious dental disease that infection ate through his jawbone!!! Poor guy was living with necrotic tissue and bone in his mouth and jaw!” the shelter said. “Honestly, I cannot even fathom the torment this caused him!”
Surgery was performed on the pup and he immediately showed signs of improvement.
“After an incredibly lengthy surgery, numerous teeth were pulled- some simply fell out and his jaw is now held together with WIRE as the bone heals,” the shelter noted in the post.
“After such extensive surgery, I was amazed that he woke up and ate like nothing even happened! He must have been in such agony that having a mouth full of stitches and bone held together with wire was less painful than what he had suffered through before!”
Butterscotch is still under the veterinarian’s care at the shelter and is not ready for adoption yet.
