Fleeing man tased by troopers plunges off overpass to his death, Utah officials say
A man tased while fleeing troopers fell off an Interstate 15 overpass to his death, Utah authorities reported.
The Utah Highway Patrol received reports of a man running in traffic in Salt Lake City at 8:03 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, the state Department of Public Safety said in a news release.
Troopers searched for the man and found him about an hour later on an overpass, officials said.
He ran from troopers after being challenged to stop, officials said. Troopers slowed traffic to try to contain the man before he caused an accident but could not catch him.
The man ran onto an off-ramp and jumped over a concrete barrier, troopers said. When he tried to jump back into the roadway, a trooper tased him.
The man fell off the overpass 30 feet into a residential yard, where he was pronounced dead, troopers said.
Troopers did not release the man’s identity or say why he was on the interstate.
An investigation into the death continues.
