An 82-year-old hunter was tracking down an elk when he got lost and had to stay the night in an Oregon forest, deputies said.

The man was with a hunting party Sept. 7 in the Tillamook State Forest, the Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

He never made his way to the meeting spot so his group got worried, deputies said.

They reported him missing at about 9 p.m. and search teams began looking for the man who has diabetes throughout the night, deputies said.

He was found before noon the next day.

Deputies said he had been carrying an emergency location device but didn’t know how to work it.

“Please understand the operating procedures of these life saving devices,” deputies said.

Tillamook State Forest is about a 45-mile drive west from Portland.
