Brown bear attacks pair of hunters, leaving one seriously injured, Alaska troopers say
A 32-year-old man was left with severe injuries after a brown bear attacked him and his hunting partner, Alaska troopers say.
The pair were along Resurrection Pass Trail near Cooper Landing on Aug. 17 when they encountered the bear, Alaska State Troopers said in an Aug. 19 news release.
The bear mauled the man, troopers said.
While they were fending off the bear, both hunters fired their guns, according to troopers.
The 32-year-old was shot in the leg, troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain told the Associated Press, adding that it’s not clear “who fired the shot that struck him.”
The hunters killed the bear during the attack, troopers said.
The injured hunter was flown to a hospital via helicopter, while his hunting partner was taken to the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center, according to troopers.
Troopers said they notified the Alaska Department of Fish and Game about the incident.
The bear’s body had yet to be recovered as of Aug. 19 “due to the medical emergency and remote location,” DeSpain told the Anchorage Daily News.
Cooper Landing is about a 100-mile drive south from Anchorage.
