Is Trump or Harris more patriotic? And who’s more corrupt? What voters said in a poll
With less than three months until the presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris now holds a 2-point nationwide lead over former President Donald Trump, according to new polling.
In the latest YouGov/Economist poll, 46% of registered voter respondents said they intend to cast their ballot for Harris, while 44% said the same for Trump.
The poll, conducted between Aug. 11 and 13, also dug deeper into respondents’ views on the upcoming election, including views on the vice presidential candidates.
It sampled 1,567 U.S. adults and has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
Harris vs. Trump
While majorities of Harris and Trump supporters are paying a lot of attention to the election this cycle, slightly more Harris supporters are tuned in.
Two-thirds of Harris supporters said they are paying a lot of attention, while 60% of Trump supporters said the same. This marks a reversal from the results of a poll taken in the first week of August, which found 61% of Harris supporters and 63% of Trump supporters were paying a great deal of attention.
The latest poll also found that voter enthusiasm was slightly higher among Democrats than Republicans, 67% compared to 65%.
On the question of who voters believed would ultimately win the election, the responses were dead-even, with 40% saying Harris and the same share saying Trump.
Additionally, similar shares of voters believe Trump and Harris say what they believe, rather than what they think others want to hear. Half of voters said they believe Trump states his own genuine beliefs, while 49% said the same for Harris.
The poll also provided voters with six traits — corrupt, qualified, patriotic, hard working, intelligent and dedicated — and asked them which they thought described the two candidates.
More voters described Trump as patriotic and corrupt, 57% and 56% respectively, compared to Harris.
Meanwhile, more voters labeled Harris as dedicated (59%), intelligent (58%), hard working (57%) and qualified (52%) than Trump.
Vance vs. Walz
The poll also asked voters about their opinions on Ohio Sen. JD Vance and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the Republican and Democratic vice presidential nominees.
Forty-seven percent of voters said Walz is a somewhat good or a very good pick for Harris’ running mate, while 34% said he was a bad pick.
Vance had slightly less favorable results, with 41% of voters calling him a good choice and 42% calling him a bad pick.
An even larger divide emerged over the question of how the vice presidential nominees will affect the race.
While 42% of voters said Walz will assist Harris in winning, just 24% said Vance will help Trump clinch a victory, marking an 18-point disparity.
Additionally, voters were asked about the military records of both candidates as Walz served in the National Guard, and Vance served in the Marines.
Sixty-four percent of voters correctly said Vance had served in the military, and the same share said Walz did.
However, while 54% of voters said Vance served honorably, less than half, 47%, said Walz served honorably. The disparity is partly explained by Harris supporters being more likely to answer that Vance served honorably than Trump supporters were to answer that Walz had.
