Three women and a man were killed in a quadruple shooting outside a home in northern Mississippi, police and sheriff’s office officials told news outlets.

It happened at about 7 p.m. Sunday, July 14, in Holly Springs, WMC reported, citing the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office.

Three of the victims were found inside a car, and a fourth person was laying outside the car in the driveway, Sheriff Kenny Dickerson told WHBQ. All four “appeared to be shot at close range” in the head, Dickerson told the station.

A 5-year-old child was in the car during the shooting but wasn’t hurt, WJTV reported.

Authorities didn’t mention a suspect or a possible motive.

McClatchy News reached out to the Holly Springs Police Department and Marshall County Sheriff’s Office for more information on Monday and was awaiting a response.

Deputies haven’t publicly identified the victims and said the investigation is ongoing.

Holly Springs is about a 60-mile drive southeast from Memphis, Tennessee.

Gun violence in the U.S.

Thousands of people in the U.S. die from firearm injuries every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Gun violence is a “serious public health problem” and was among the leading causes of death for people ages 1 to 44 in 2022, the agency said. What’s more, experts say the impact goes far beyond victims and their families.

“Shooting incidents, including those in homes, schools, houses of worship, workplaces, shopping areas, on the street or at community events can affect the sense of safety and security of entire communities and impact everyday decisions,” according to the CDC.
