Woman swims miles to shore as boat capsizes, officials say. Another missing for hours
Turbulent waves in Lake Michigan separated two women when their small sailboat capsized on June 16, Illinois officials and WGN reported.
The 12-foot boat left Evanston and capsized near Winnetka around dusk, the Village of Winnetka said in a statement. One boater, equipped with a life preserver, swam 2 miles and made it safely to shore around 2 a.m.
The woman told authorities the other boater was still missing, launching an hours-long search and rescue operation, officials said.
The Coast Guard located the missing woman approximately 1 mile from the shore around 7 a.m. on June 17. She was also equipped with a life preserver, officials and WLS reported.
The 50-year-old woman was taken to Montrose Harbor in Chicago, officials said. Officials did not provide information on her condition.
The Coast Guard also located the capsized boat about 2 to 3 miles from shore, the village said.
Evanston is about a 5-mile drive southeast of Winnetka. Winnetka is about a 20-mile drive north of Chicago.
