Cries in trash lead to abandoned kittens, Florida shelter says. Now they have homes
Two “loving and affectionate” kittens were abandoned in the trash — then a yogurt shop worker stepped in to help, a Florida animal shelter said.
The worker was leaving her job at a Yogurtology shop in Tampa when she heard loud cries and “scared meows.” The noises led her to two kittens that were inside a garbage bag, according to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.
“They were in a trash bag full of trash,” Regan Blessinger, a spokesperson for the animal shelter, told McClatchy News in an Oct. 31 phone interview. “So they were completely covered, wet from whatever was in the trash.”
Fortunately, the worker brought the kittens home to feed them and give them much-needed baths. Their physical health was OK, and the shelter doesn’t believe the baby animals were in the trash for long.
The kittens, estimated to be 3 months old, were taken to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay on Oct. 24. After the rescue, there was more good news for the kittens — a possible brother and sister pair named Alpine and Swirl.
“Despite what Alpine and Swirl had been through, they were loving and affectionate and it didn’t take long for them to both find their forever homes!” the shelter wrote on Facebook after two separate families adopted the babies.
While the shelter discouraged people from discarding their pets, its Facebook post didn’t list possible consequences for those accused of throwing the kittens in the trash. McClatchy News has reached out for additional information.
