Hunter with hypothermia rescued in Alaska, officials say. ‘Summer is over’

An Alaska Air National Guard helicopter rescued a hunter with hypothermia near Seward, officials say.

The person left a group of hunters to look for shelter Sept. 20 at Paradise Lakes, about 25 miles northeast of Seward, the Alaska Air National Guard said in a news release.

The remaining hunters used a satellite radio to call for help, officials said. When a LifeMed helicopter arrived to pick them up, they reported the fourth hunter was missing.

Authorities asked the Alaska Air National Guard for help, and a helicopter flew to a cabin at Paradise Lakes to pick up the fourth hunter, who was flown to a hospital, officials said.

“Especially in September, Alaska always has a say,” Alaska Air National Guard Capt. Dan Warren said. “Summer is over. Preparation is everything. Hunters and hikers flown into a location without road access should always carry a means to shelter with ample protection against changing wind, rain and temperatures.”

Seward is about 125 miles south of Anchorage.
