Missing 11-year-old dies after being pulled from pond by deputies, Mississippi cops say
An 11-year-old died in an apparent drowning after he went missing near a pond in Mississippi, deputies say.
Authorities responded Monday, Aug. 21, after the boy vanished in the area near Reservoir Way, according to the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office.
A neighbor spotted the child in the pond but couldn’t reach him, per a news release. That’s when deputies rushed to pull him out of the water.
They started CPR until medics arrived, deputies said. The child was then taken to a hospital where he died. His identity wasn’t released.
Authorities didn’t provide additional information but said an investigation into the incident is underway.
Drownings in the US
An estimated 4,000 people die from drowning in the U.S. every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Drowning is among the leading causes of death for children, and certain factors can increase the risk, including not knowing how to swim, a lack of close supervision and not wearing a life jacket.
The National Drowning Prevention Alliance said there are tips to help keep you safe in the water, including checking local weather conditions, never swimming alone and choosing the right equipment.
Rankin County is about 20 miles east of downtown Jackson.
