A pair of hikers found human remains and a dog at a dispersed Oregon campsite, according to a sheriff’s office.

After retrieving the dog from the campsite outside the coastal city of Yachats and walking to their car on July 25, the hikers contacted deputies, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said in a July 26 news release.

The hikers led deputies to the campsite, which was about “a half-mile into thick foliage, through rough terrain,” the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies said the remains seemed to have been there for some time.

Once a death investigation was done, a search and rescue team recovered the remains, which “have been tentatively identified.”

They will undergo further testing to confirm the identity, deputies said, adding that the death is not considered suspicious.

The dog was taken to the county animal shelter, deputies said. They did not say if they knew how it ended up at the campsite.

Yachats is about 85 miles northwest of Eugene.
