A 36-year-old man lighting fireworks in the street near a shopping center died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver, California police told news outlets.

The crash took place at about 9:10 p.m. Monday, July 3, on North Fries Avenue in the community of Wilmington, according to a Los Angeles Fire Department news release.

A silver 2008 Ford Explorer struck the man, sending him flying down the street, then fled without stopping, police told KCBS.

The man landed underneath another vehicle that was leaving the shopping center parking lot, according to the release. He died at the scene.

The driver of the second vehicle remained at the scene, police told KTLA. No other injuries were reported.

Wilmington is a neighborhood about 30 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.
