A woman died in a hit-and-run crash on a San Francisco Bay Area freeway after stopping to help another motorist, the California Highway Patrol told news outlets.

A man and woman in a Mitsubishi stopped on Interstate 880 near Fremont at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, May 14, to help move a disabled vehicle from a solo crash onto the side of the highway, officers told KPIX.

The woman was standing between the two vehicles when a Ford F-150 pickup truck hit the Mitsubishi, which then struck and killed the woman, the CHP told KNTV.

The driver of the pickup truck ran away after the crash, officers told KGO. The driver of the disabled vehicle was later arrested on charges of driving under the influence, police said.

The woman’s name has not been released.

The CHP asks that anyone with information on the crash call 510-489-1500.
