A former University of Oklahoma football player was shot and killed at a Dallas rental home, police said.

Police in Dallas said they were sent to a home where 25-year-old Du’Vonta Lampkin was staying when he not answering phone calls. When a witness checked on him, they found him injured and called for help.

Lampkin was discovered by Dallas police at 10 p.m. on Thursday, May 5, “lying on his back with a single gunshot wound.” He died at the scene.

Police did not reveal any information regarding a potential suspect. Lampkin was staying at the rental home while he waited to move into a new apartment.

Lampkin was a member of the University of Oklahoma football program for three years from 2015 to 2017. He recorded 23 tackles as a redshirt sophomore, including 5 tackles for loss.

In a statement on Twitter, the OU football program said it was “deeply saddened” by Lampkin’s death.

“Du’Vonta was full of life and spirit, was a supportive teammate and a joy to be around,” the statement read. “Our sincerest thoughts, prayers and sympathies are with his family and loved ones.”

Lampkin, originally from Houston, was rated as the No. 22 defensive tackle prospect in the country coming out of Cy Falls High School, according to 24/7 Sports. He declared for the NFL Draft in 2017, but went undrafted.

Anyone with information into Lampkin’s death is asked to contact Dallas police homicide detective Josue Rodriguez at 214-671-3994.
