Swastika mowed into North Carolina lawn, photo shows. ‘Racism never went away’
Police are investigating after someone mowed a massive swastika into the front lawn of a Richlands, North Carolina, home, outlets report.
“To have someone do something like this breaks my heart,” Tapresha Cummings wrote in a Facebook post, sharing a picture of the swastika on her family’s property.
“This land was built with love, the people who owned this home (my Nana and Papa) were some of the most loving people in the world,” Cummings said.
She’s calling on friends and neighbors to get the word out to bring attention to an act she called “pure evil.”
“I don’t know why they chose our family home but, you picked the wrong house.”
Cummings’ parents moved out of the home after Hurricane Florence damaged the property in 2018, she told The Daily News in Jacksonville. Currently, nobody lives there.
“My Nana and Papa raised me in that home and just to know that someone took the time out of their day to do this, that is hurtful,” Cummings told the outlet. “Racism has never went away, but it is very prevalent right now.”
The Onslow County Sheriff’s Department is looking into the situation, Sheriff Hans Miller said in a statement, WNCT reported.
“We are taking this incident very seriously. When we learned of the incident, we sent a deputy out to take a report and dispatched detectives shortly thereafter,” Miller said. “We are doing everything possible to determine who did the damage, and why. This kind of behavior is NOT acceptable in our county or our country. We encourage anyone with information to please come forward and let us know.”
