Knife-wielding man robs Bellingham gas station; suspect arrested

A man accused of robbing a Bellingham gas station with a kitchen knife was arrested Monday night, June 15.

Phillip Thomas Beck Jr., 29, walked into a Shell gas station on East Holly Street around 8:15 p.m. and walked toward the beer cooler. A clerk saw him take something — a jar of the 28-proof malt beverage Great American Apple Pie — before leaving the store without paying, said Bellingham Police Lt. Mike Johnston.

Outside the clerk confronted him. Beck reached down into his backpack.

“I have something for you,” he said as he whipped out a long chef’s knife with a red handle, according to police.

The clerk backed off. Police tracked down the suspect at a bus station and ordered him to get on the ground. Officers recovered the Apple Pie beverage.

Beck faces a charge of robbery in the first degree. Jail records list his bail at $20,000.
