Video shows tussle between Macy’s employee, alleged robber

Surveillance video taken from a parking lot at Bellis Fair Mall shows an alleged robber fight with a Macy’s employee for 90 seconds before police say he threatened the employee with a dirty syringe and escaped.

The Macy’s employee, Derek Smith, caught Hans R. Eaton, 33, hide jewelry in his pocket and walk out of the store with another man without paying around 12:10 p.m. Monday, May 25, according to charging papers filed in Whatcom County Superior Court.

Smith followed them to the parking lot and identified himself as a loss prevention officer, charges say. Video released by police shows Eaton immediately resist. The man with him disappears, and bystanders watch Smith and Eaton wrestle for over a minute.

At some point during the confrontation, Eaton said, “I have a needle in my pocket. I have Hepatitis C and will stab you,” before he was able to escape into some trees nearby, according to the charges.

Police arrested Eaton at his Blaine house the next day after he tried escaping out the back door. He has been charged with second-degree robbery.
