Bellingham driver seriously injured in crash near Walla Walla

A Bellingham driver is in serious condition following a rollover crash in Walla Walla County on Tuesday, June 9.

Austin W. Smith, 25, drove a Ford pickup truck east on Highway 12 near Touchet while towing a Pontiac Grand Am around noon, according to the Washington State Patrol. The truck swerved off the roadway and Smith over-corrected, causing the truck to roll over an embankment, troopers said.

Paramedics took Smith to St. Mary's hospital in Walla Walla where he remained Wednesday with serious injuries, a nursing supervisor said.

A passenger, 55-year-old Michelle A. McCallum-Smith of Walla Walla, also had serious injuries and was being transported to Harborview Medical Center on Wednesday evening. Another passenger was uninjured in the crash, the state patrol said.

The truck was totaled. All three people were wearing seat belts, troopers said.
