Blaine driver accused of DUI in crash that sent 3 to hospital

A Blaine woman faces a charge of vehicular assault for a head-on crash that sent three people to a hospital Thursday, July 14, in Snohomish County.

Jessica Lynn Sommermeyer, 34, had been driving a white Honda Accord east on State Route 531 around 6:40 p.m. when she drifted over the eastbound fog line and onto a shoulder that’s a couple inches of asphalt, said Sgt. Mark Francis of the Washington State Patrol. She tried to recover but overcorrected just east of 37th Avenue NW, according to troopers.

Her 2002 Honda then crossed the center line and collided head-on with a westbound green Honda CRV. Both cars were totaled.

All three people needed treatment at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett. Sommermeyer had abrasions and other injuries. A passenger in her car, Brian Allen Bachand, 40, of Stanwood, suffered a broken femur. They weren’t wearing seatbelts, according to the state patrol.

The other driver, Darlene Hofbauer, 56, of Stanwood, suffered relatively minor injuries, Francis said. She had been wearing her seatbelt.

Troopers suspect Sommermeyer was under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or both. Open containers of alcohol and drug paraphernalia were documented found in the Accord. She faces a felony charge of vehicular assault while driving under the influence.

Sommermeyer remained at the Everett hospital Friday evening. Once she’s well enough, she’ll be booked into the Snohomish County Jail, according to the state patrol.

That stretch of State Route 531 is also known as Lakewood Road. The short highway goes from the Arlington airport to Warm Beach.
