Police were searching for the driver of a car that went over a ledge overlooking South Bay Trail Friday afternoon, May 27.
The blue sedan went off the ledge about 3:45 p.m. The driver was uninjured and walked off before officials arrived, said Lt. Bob Vander Yacht, a Bellingham Police Department spokesman. No one on the trail was harmed. A machete had been left behind inside the car, he added.
Police were still searching for the man late Friday afternoon, Vander Yacht said, adding that officers believed they knew his identity but declined to release his name.
“If it is the person we think it is, he has a local warrant and has a suspended driver’s license ... two reasons that folks commonly don’t stay at crash scenes,” Vander Yacht said in an email.

A tow truck had driven up South Bay Trail and was removing the car around 5 p.m. The only damage besides the car, Vander Yacht said, was to the bushes and trees where the car landed.
