A local man who raped a woman he knew in 2013 will spend nine months behind bars, a judge ruled Thursday, April 28.
Ryan Michael Greenwell, 32, pleaded guilty in January to third-degree rape and fourth-degree assault for the July 2013 crime.
According to court documents, Greenwell went to the woman’s Whatcom County apartment uninvited and entered without permission. There, he found the woman talking with another man. The woman, trying to avoid a confrontation, asked the other man to leave.
Once the other man left, Greenwell proceeded to forcibly remove the woman’s clothes and rape her.
He stopped when the woman’s toddler, who had been sleeping one room over, tried to get inside the bedroom. The woman was able to roll away from Greenwell and get dressed.
Greenwell left shortly after, and the woman called police.
Greenwell was sentenced to nine months in prison for each charge and will serve them concurrently, Judge Raquel Montoya-Lewis said Thursday.
