Police: Teen crashes bike after theft at Yeager’s in Bellingham
A would-be thief who tried to flee Yeager’s Sporting Goods with stolen clothes didn’t get very far before crashing his bicycle mid-getaway, police said.
The 17-year-old tried stealing clothes from the sporting goods store on Northwest Avenue at about 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 20. He took off on a bicycle heading southwest on Northwest Avenue but hit a curb near the street’s intersection with West Illinois Street, said Lt. Bob Vander Yacht with the Bellingham Police Department.
The bike’s front wheel came off in the crash, sending the teen over the handlebars. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.
No pedestrians or other vehicles were involved with the crash, Vander Yacht said.
Though he ended up dropping the clothes near the door’s entrance, the teen still was expected to face a charge of third-degree theft for making it past the register with the merchandise, Vander Yacht said. The Bellingham Herald does not name juveniles accused of most crimes.
