Bellingham Herald publisher arrested on suspicion of DUI

Bellingham Herald Publisher Mark D. Owings, 45, was arrested Saturday, April 2, on suspicion of driving under the influence.

He was stopped by the Washington State Patrol on Interstate 5 south of downtown Bellingham on his way home.

“I apologize for the negative impact this may have on my family, friends and The Bellingham Herald. I am working through the standard legal procedures and will accept responsibility for whatever the outcome,” Owings said. He declined further comment.

An 18-year employee of the media company, he was appointed by The McClatchy Company to the top post at The Herald in 2010.
