Ferndale motorcyclist critical, faces DUI after crash

A Ferndale man remained in critical condition Friday morning, April 1, at Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center after his motorcycle veered off Interstate 5 in Skagit County and struck a ditch in the median Thursday night.

Todd Allen Benson, 47, is suspected of being drunk when the crash happened; a driving under the influence charge is pending, according to Washington State Patrol.

Benson was thrown from his 1991 Honda CBR at about 1:40 p.m. about a mile south of Bow Hill Road. He was taken to Skagit Valley Hospital before being airlifted to Harborview.

Though initial reports said Benson was riding at “a high rate” of speed, it was unclear exactly how fast he was going, Heather Axtman, a spokeswoman for Washington State Patrol, said Friday morning.

Benson was wearing a helmet, according to WSP.
