Bellingham woman crossing Cornwall hit by car, critically hurt

A 63-year-old woman was in critical condition at St. Joseph hospital Wednesday, Feb. 3, after she was struck in a crosswalk near the Bellingham Church of the Assumption.

Sadako Smith, of Bellingham, had been legally crossing Cornwall Avenue at Virginia Street around 5:40 p.m. Tuesday when she was hit by a northbound car driven by an elderly woman, said Bellingham Police Sgt. Mark Stokes.

The car had been going about 20 mph, but the driver did not see Smith in time, Stokes said. It was a half hour after sunset, and Smith was wearing dark clothes.

Paramedics found Smith suffered “significant” injuries and she was rushed from the scene via ambulance, said Bellingham Assistant Fire Chief Bill Hewett.

Cornwall was shut down while traffic officers investigated.

No other details have been released about the car, driver, or what charge, if any, the driver could face.
