A woman crossing Lakeway Drive suffered serious injuries Thursday, Jan. 21, when she was struck by a car while in a crosswalk.
The woman, 24, pressed the crosswalk button on the south side of the 1300 block of Lakeway Drive, near the 7-Eleven, to cross the street northward around 10 a.m., according to the Bellingham Police Department.
The crosswalk has flashing yellow lights, and one car in the right eastbound lane stopped for her. The driver of a gray 2005 Nissan Sentra in the left eastbound lane did not hit the brakes in time, said Lt. Bob Vander Yacht.
The Nissan struck the pedestrian, upending her. Her body broke the windshield, then pitched forward off the hood onto the street. She was conscious as an ambulance took her to St. Joseph hospital for injuries to her left hip, left leg and back. She’s expected to survive, Vander Yacht said.
