A small fire damaged a Bellingham duplex Monday afternoon, Nov. 2, in the Roosevelt neighborhood.

Neighbors of the Hillside Homes — a city housing authority development — called 911 about 2:20 p.m. to report smoke and flames coming from the first floor at 2166 Hillside Lane, off Yew Street.

Firefighters from Station 4, around the corner, arrived moments later to find one of the windows had broken open from the heat. They could not see flames through the heavy, dark smoke but sprayed water into the room until the fire was knocked down.

Smoke left damage throughout the two-story home.

Residents of the unit weren’t home. One person was evacuated, unharmed, from an attached unit.

The cause of the fire was under investigation Monday by the city fire marshal.
