Whatcom sheriff: Man slits brother’s throat in fight

A man slit his brother’s throat during a drunken fight and threatened to release a pit bull when deputies arrived at their home near Birch Bay Sunday, Oct. 11, according to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.

Nathaniel Ernest Keith Deal, 27, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault after deputies found his younger brother with a 4-inch cut to his throat Sunday, said Whatcom County Undersheriff Jeff Parks. The victim was taken to St. Joseph hospital and has since been released.

Witnesses heard the victim yell “I can’t believe you slit my throat!” toward his brother outside their home in the 8200 block of Alder Way around 3:30 a.m., Parks said. The sheriff’s office has not released the victim’s name, but said he was a couple years younger than his brother.

Deal had blood on his shirt and his younger brother was bleeding from the neck when deputies arrived, Parks said.

Both men were uncooperative and appeared drunk, Parks said, and Deal threatened to release his pit bull on deputies. Later, the dog ran out of the house toward a deputy, showed its teeth and began “acting aggressively,” forcing the deputy to discharge a Taser, Parks said. The pit bull ran back into the house.

Parks was not sure if the Taser hit the dog.

The victim had to be restrained before he was taken to the hospital. Both men told deputies that he cut his neck by falling on a nail, Parks said.

Deal posted bond and was released from Whatcom County Jail on Sunday.
