A fire that destroyed a pickup truck in the Kendall Elementary School parking lot Tuesday morning, Oct. 6, is being investigated as arson.
The flames started in the cab of a Dodge Dakota around 3:30 a.m. in the school parking lot, 7547 Kendall Road, said Whatcom County Fire Marshal’s Office investigator Mitch Nolze.
Witnesses told Nolze that the pickup had been parked in the lot for several days. He said there is no reason to believe that any mechanical issue ignited the fire.
Nolze said the truck is a total loss, with damage estimated at roughly $1,500. He did not know Tuesday why the truck was parked in the lot.

No suspects had been identified as of Tuesday afternoon, Nolze said.
The fire is the second in the Maple Falls area in as many nights. Early Monday a fire burned through a shed, garage and vacant home behind the former Frosty Inn. Nolze has not ruled out arson being involved in that fire, but the official cause likely will remain undetermined due to the extent of damage.
