Two elderly people were found dead at their Central Road home Wednesday evening, Sept. 2, triggering an investigation by the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.

Sgt. Kevin Moyes said two people who lived at the house at 1158 Central Road, between Laurel and Everson, were found dead about 6:45 p.m. Wednesday. He declined to release other information.

According to police radio dispatches, the person who called 911 about the deaths thought the two people might have been electrocuted. However, because it wasn’t immediately clear what caused the deaths, investigators were treating them like homicides. That is standard procedure in such cases.

The electricity at the property was still on, according to a deputy at the scene, and no power outages were reported in that exact area.

According to the dispatches, a relative checking on the two found them dead. Moyes would not say how long the two might have been dead before the bodies were discovered.

The house is owned by Anthony and Marilyn Vermeulen, according to the Whatcom County Assessor’s Office.
