Whatcom County man charged with assault after baseball bat attack outside casino

A Whatcom County man has been charged with second-degree assault after allegedly hitting a man with a baseball bat outside a casino.

Court records indicate a man and his girlfriend were waiting for a ride in the parking lot of the Nooksack Northwood Casino north of Lynden near the border with Canada on March 20. The woman texted William Treadaway, 50, to pick her up.

When Treadaway arrived shortly before 6 a.m., the other man said he saw Treadaway holding a pocket knife. He kicked the car so that Treadaway would leave, according to court documents. Treadaway then got out of the vehicle and “exchanged words” with the other man.

The man told police that Treadaway then grabbed a baseball bat from his car and approached him, holding the open pocket knife in his other hand. Treadaway hit the man in the shoulder with the bat, court records state, and made a “threatening gesture” with the knife.

Treadaway left the scene before police arrived, and officers went to his residence on the 5200 block of Graveline Road. He was told he was under arrest, but refused to come outside for three hours and 20 minutes.

Treadaway was charged with second-degree assault, harassment and obstructing a law enforcement officer. He was released from Whatcom County Jail on Tuesday after posting a $15,000 bond.
