A Ferndale man has been charged with first-degree assault in Whatcom County Superior Court after allegedly attempting to attack his neighbor with an ax.

Everlains Eden Guiterez Hernandez, 46, was arrested Feb. 3 by the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office. According to court records, Guiterez Hernandez broke down the door of his neighbor’s trailer with a two-handed ax while his neighbor was sleeping at about 3:30 a.m.

Guiterez Hernandez swung the ax at his neighbor, court documents state, making “numerous swings.” The neighbor blocked the attack with his arms, which led to a minor cut on his left arm. He told police that Guiterez Hernandez then grabbed a knife and “acted like he was going to stab” him.

Court records do not explain why Guiterez Hernandez attacked his neighbor or left the motor home before police arrived.

When police got to the scene, they found what looked like slash marks on the main door. The inside of the trailer was “in disarray,” according to court documents, and the neighbor told deputies it was due to a struggle with Guiterez Hernandez.

Guiterez Hernandez was arrested eight hours later and charged with first-degree assault and first-degree burglary. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.

As of Monday afternoon, Guiterez Hernandez remains in Whatcom County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond.
