Authorities have arrested a man who is suspected of attempting to rob a woman after she withdrew cash from a Bellingham ATM.

The woman told police she pulled about $100 from an ATM on East Holly Street between Cornwall and Railroad Avenue around 1 p.m. Jan. 3, according to Lt. Claudia Murphy with The Bellingham Police Department.

The woman said she walked north through the alley between JJ’s In and Out and the Horseshoe Cafe. She was confronted by a man, later identified as Tony L. Wright, 25, who told her the money was his and attempted to pull it from her hands, according to Murphy.

When the woman held on to the money, Wright allegedly punched her multiple times in the face and threatened to kill her, according to court documents.

Wright left the area before police could arrive.

Police used a description of Wright they recovered from video surveillance to locate him around New Street later in the day. Murphy said he was taken into custody without incident.

Wright is in custody at Whatcom County Jail and has been charged with first-degree robbery, a class B felony, and harassment-threat to kill, a class C felony.
