A 27-year-old Ferndale woman was arrested Friday night on suspicion of third-degree assault for punching a health care worker.

Bellingham Police Department Lt. Claudia Murphy said the woman was found by a St. Joseph Medical Center employee in a room where she was not supposed to be. When the hospital employee tried to escort her back to her own room, the woman punched him in the face with a closed fist.

Murphy said the employee attempted to restrain the woman, but she continued to strike him, including in the back of the head. He sustained a minor injury.

Police arrived at the hospital at 8:26 p.m. and took the woman into custody. She remains at Whatcom County Jail as of Monday morning on $1,000 bond.
