A dedicated patrol around Western Washington University the day before Thanksgiving led to 13 arrests, the Washington State Patrol announced.

The patrol, titled “No Tipsy Turkeys,” involved a total 118 contacts with WSP and local law enforcement. About 40% of these citations were related to speeding. Of the arrests, eight were for DUIs, and five were not traffic-related.

Police also cited six people for not wearing seat belts and two for distracted driving during the emphasis patrol.

A total of 24 people were booked into Whatcom County Jail between Wednesday and Sunday for DUIs. Half of the arrests occurred on Thanksgiving and the day before.

“As we continue into the holiday season, WSP would like to remind the motoring public to make safe and responsible decisions behind the wheel,” WSP said. “Your commitment to sober, attentive, and courteous driving helps keep Washington roadways safe for everyone.”
