An Everson man was sentenced to three years in prison on domestic violence charges in Whatcom County Superior Court on Monday.

Pedro Perez-Lopez, 43, was arrested in August 2021 after a woman wrote a letter to police asking for help. She said that she was physically and sexually assaulted by Perez-Lopez and not allowed to leave the house. She said he also threatened to kill her with a knife.

Perez-Lopez pleaded guilty Aug. 5 to felony harassment, third-degree rape, unlawful imprisonment and two counts of fourth-degree assault.

While the victim did not speak at Perez-Lopez’s sentencing or provide a statement to the Department of Corrections, a relative said the incident has affected the entire family. She said they are all “ready to move on and would like the court to hold (Perez-Lopez) accountable for his behavior.”

Perez-Lopez also chose not to address the court.

Judge Jennifer Slattery said she was sure that what happened was “terrifying” for the victim. She followed the agreed recommendation of three years in prison followed by two years in community custody. Perez-Lopez will be required to undergo a sexual deviancy evaluation and follow any recommended treatment.

Slattery said she hopes Perez-Lopez will look into domestic violence and behavioral health treatment while he’s in prison.
