Suspect remains at large following report of sexual assault near BTC

Whatcom County law enforcement recommended people avoid Little Squalicum Park for several hours Wednesday morning while they searched the area for a sexual assault suspect after Bellingham Technical College issued an emergency alert at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The suspect remains at large, but around noon authorities stated there was no longer a threat to the college, according to a news release from BTC. As a result, campus doors were unlocked and a previous “hold” status was lifted.

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Department issued a statement just after 4 p.m. Wednesday saying the investigation continues and offering a suspect description based on witness interviews. The suspect is described as a white male in his 30s or 40s, with a larger frame and heavy appearance, approximately 5 feet, 10 inches to 6 feet, 1 inch tall, wearing brown pants and an tan jacket at the time of the reported assault. He also had a beard and dark, curly, frizzy hair in a ponytail.

“Detectives are requesting community members and businesses in the area to check their surveillance footage (Ring, Nest, etc.) for Wednesday, Aug. 20, between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.,” according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office. “If you locate relevant or suspicious footage, please call the WCSO tip line at 360-778-6663.”

A sexual assault was reported in the area Wednesday morning. Entrances to Little Squalicum Park remained blocked with police tape as of 11:10 a.m. Wednesday.

  • Wait until the “All Clear” is announced by staff or emergency responders
